The federal Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 (FMLA) provides eligible employees with up to 12 weeks of job protected leave for the treatment of a serious health condition, the adoption or birth of a child, or to care for a seriously ill family member. All employers with 50 or more employees within a 75-mile radius, and all elementary and secondary schools regardless of number of employees, are covered by the FMLA.

The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) has released revised FMLA regulations that expand and clarify employer obligations under the FMLA. The new final rules clarify intermittent FMLA usage, add provisions relating to military caregiver leave and qualifying exigency leave, and introduce newly revised FMLA documentation forms. FMLA leave has also been extended to flight crew members.
