The office of United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), formerly known as the Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS), recently released a revised Form I-9. The new form includes mandatory changes to the List of Acceptable Documents, as well as other substantive changes. According to a notice publihed in the Federal Register, the new form must be used from Apirl 3, 2009, onward until superseded. The currently acceptable I-9 forms are dated 2/2/2009 and 8/7/2009. Employers are responsible for the completion and retention of Forms I-9 for all employees, regardless of citizenship or national origin, hired for employment in the United States. Additionally, Employers must retain the I-9 form of each employee either for three (3) years after the date of hire or for one (1) year after employment is terminated, whichever is later.
